The Meyer family is one of the oldest winegrowing families in Alsace. Since the 17th century, knowledge, craftsmanship and respect for the terroir have been passed down from one generation to the next. What began as a traditional mixed farm gradually developed over the centuries into a specialised wine estate, where heritage and innovation go hand in hand.
In 1976, Hubert Meyer took over the estate from his father, André. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in the family’s history. Hubert was the first in the family to bottle the wines himself and market them under the family name, rather than supplying all of the grapes to the local cooperative. In doing so, he laid the foundations for the estate’s own style and quality philosophy. During the 1980s, he was joined by his wife Jocelyne, who played an important role in the further development and professionalisation of the business.
The biggest change came in 2009, when their son Pierre joined the estate after studying viticulture and oenology in Rouffach. He brought with him not only technical expertise and a modern approach to winemaking, but also a strong belief that the future of the domaine lay in organic viticulture. Pierre convinced his father of the importance of working the vineyards with greater respect for the soil, the vines and biodiversity. The estate gradually made the transition and is now fully certified organic.
For the Meyer family, organic farming is not a passing trend, but a clear philosophy: to produce wines that reflect their origin as purely as possible, with minimal intervention, healthy living soils and a natural balance in the vineyard. The move towards organic viticulture has also gone hand in hand with a refinement of the estate’s style. The wines have become more precise, drier and more transparent, with greater emphasis on freshness, tension and minerality.
Under the direction of Hubert and Pierre, several new cuvées were also introduced, including a Riesling Grand Cru Winzenberg and a Crémant Rosé. Crémant d’Alsace in particular has become one of the estate’s signature wines: a sparkling wine that, thanks to organically grown grapes, careful selection and extended ageing, can stand alongside some of the finest sparkling wines in France.
Today, Domaine Hubert Meyer represents a family that has successfully combined centuries of tradition with a modern and sustainable vision. Organic viticulture is at the heart of their work, driven by the belief that great wines can only come from healthy vineyards and a deep respect for nature and terroir.
